 SEBASTIAN MARQUEZ This
native New Yorker was born and raised in the concrete jungle during the
rise and fall of disco and the birth of hip-hop. The landscape, the
music and his ethnic background were all key ingredients in the
formulation of his passion for art and music.
Sebastian Marquez is the son of Nuyorican parents; his dad served honorably during the Vietnam War and later honed his craft as a professional photographer; him mom used her degree in Education for the benefit of hundreds, if not thousands, of children whom she came into contact with in her role as a Recreational Therapist for a major NYC hospital. Sebastian and his brother were raised in Brooklyn, sometimes in the care of other family members, which allowed them to form close bonds with numerous cousins and other relatives. They also shared a deep sense of pride in the family and spiritual values they were taught, as well as the cultural and ethnic traditions they participated in. Their parents would frequently take them to museums, Puerto Rican and West Indian parades, concerts, plays, botanical gardens as well as trips to Puerto Rico (their homeland). It was this exposure to the sights, sounds, smells and overall excitement of these experiences that led to Sebastian's passion for art; for him, it has become the best way that he knows how to "paint a picture" of his people, his culture, his history and his spirit.
